Windows 7: Remove Security Warning Message from Downloaded Files

Important: I am assuming you are a PowerUser and know what you are doing. Do not disable security features on computers used by beginners.

When you download files from the internet windows automatically adds a property “zone information” to the file. The user is then warned that this file was from an untrusted source.

Unfortunately windows also sometimes decides that NAS-folders are also a dangerous zone. I almost could not use my NAS-drive because of all the warnings.

Disable warning for a single file

You can unblock any single file by right-clicking on it and opening the Properties. In the lower part of the “General”-tab you can click “Unblock”.

Permanently Disable

You can adjust a group policy to prevent windows from adding the zone information in the first place.

  1. Open gpedit.msc (Run as Admin)
  2. Navigate to “User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Attachment Manager”
  3. Enable “Do not preserve zone information in file attachments”

4. In CMD execute “gpupdate /force” or restart the computer.
